The Sound of OM

The Sound of OM
This morning in yoga class, we ended our practice with the sound of three OMs. It can be a beautiful, powerful way to begin or end any practice. The vibrational sound can resonate throughout your entire body right down to your soul creating complete peace and balance.
If we analyze OM as it is written in Sanskrit, we see that it is actually made up of A, U, M and a symbol representing resonance. So OM has four aspects. The first aspect is A. It is a sound that comes from the belly, it is formed by opening your throat and is voiced with an open mouth. As with the alphabet, A is the first letter of the Sanskrit alphabet. The second is U. U is a sound that is formed in the middle of the mouth. The mouth is not as wide open as it is for sounding the A. With the third sound, M, the mouth closes. The sound rises to the nasal passages, from where the resonance, the forth aspect of OM, issues forth.
U stands for the continuity and connection, M is the final consonant in the Sanskrit alphabet. So getting from A to M through U represents everything that can be expressed in letters and words. A, the beginning stands for the process of creation. U symbolizes the continuance of creation, which is constantly renewing itself. M symbolizes the end and dissolution.
The Upanisads say that the OM symbol is a representation of the waking state (A), the dream state (U), the state of deep dreamless sleep (M), and the forth state is samadhi (resonance following M).
OM is a tool used to allow the mind to become very still and for dispelling obstacles we meet as we move forward in life. It is a form of meditation. It is important to not become mechanical in voicing OM. We must think about what it means and open ourselves to new discovery each time.
